UNESCO renews Tapio’s appointment

UNESCO has renewed the appointment of Prof. Tapio Varis as its Chair in Global E-Learning with applications to multiple domains. With the fresh mandate, Dr. Varis who is also a member of the board of Center for Media & Peace Initiatives in New York will serve UNESCO until 2017.
Tapio’s research agenda include work on media literacy and new humanism. According to the professor emeritus of University of Tampere, Finland, “civilizations and cultures have very different patterns of communication and use different senses in a different way. In consequence, if a truly global information society is to be created, more attention must be given to the diversity of cultures and the co-existence of different civilizations and cultures”.
As part of his early engagements, Prof. Varis will join a meeting of UNESCO Chairs on higher education, ICT in education and teachers that will be held at UNESCO headquarters, Paris, on 23 and 24 January 2014 to facilitate UNESCO’s cooperation with the Chairs and the Networks on higher education, ICT in education and teachers.
